WER TRÄGT WEN? Who Wears Who?

Chemnitz
2022

This is a textile-based experiment on the morphology, extents, and behaviours of one collective body in the wind. One long piece of fabric to bind individuals together. 15 sleeves can lodge up 15 limbs. The wind, the number of bearers, their movement and their velocity induce various morphologies. There is a playfulness whilst vesting and pertaining the binding strand. The complicity and togetherness whilst bearing the piece is palpable. The powerplay of being a sleeve in the Fabric is evermore changing. One does not know exactly when they are pulling or being pulled. The collision of forces is disorienting, they get lost in the commotion.

Bullwhip Effect, falling Sensations, textile harness.
Bodies in movements, one moving body.
Isn’t it nice to be part of a whole?
Isn’t it nice to be so unique yet so common?
To know that nothing & everything matters at the same time.
To wear a paradox on your sleeve.
Aren’t we all carrying some sort of a burden collectively?

‘For it is not true that the work of man is finished, That we have nothing more to do in the world, That we are just parasites in this world, That it is enough for us to walk in step with the world, For the work of man is only just beginning and it remains to conquer all, The violence entrenched in the recess of his passion, And no race holds a monopoly of beauty, of intelligence, of strength, and, There is a place for all at the rendezvous of Victory.’
Aimé Césaire - Notebook of a Return To My Native Land

The UnbearAble-Bodiedness, a sisters’ storytelling dance.

Weimar
2023

This storytelling dance is an autoethnographic take on systemic ableism. It comes as an exchange of perspectives between a non-hearing and a hearing sister. By recognising the ways ableism has affected their lives, they channel their research into a large-scale installation & dance in the public space of Weimar, former Gauforum. They artistically collaborate to unravel and expose ableist and audist structures. Gauforum is an epitome institution of oppressing normativity and disablism. One can see its oppressive intentions through its orthogonal fabric, sequential façades and imposing scale. While performing there in between windblown hand sculptures, the sisters revisit the damaging alienation ableism and audism inflict on individuals […]

Approaching a wall

“Approaching a wall in Beirut is not so hard of a thing to do. The filthier the better. People keep asking: How do you spot it? Are you allowed? Do you have permission? I internally laugh and think to myself who’s going to stop you from touching a filthy, abandoned, cracked wall in Beirut? Who’s going to go up to you and stop you from stomping on piles of accumulated garbage? No one.” هلا
